Self-Hypnosis Tutorial: Creating Your Outline

In this section you will create your outline for your self-hypnosis script.  You will identify your intention and discover your motivations.  You will also learn of any obstacles that might be preventing you from realizing your desire.

Identify your Intention—Begin by writing a few sentences that describe what it is you would like to create or what it is you’d like to change.  And then from those sentences, write one sentence that perfectly reflects your intention.  As an example, let’s say we’re frustrated by our lack of resolve or motivation in finishing a website.  Specifically, let’s say we’d like to finish a website we’ve been working on for some time but don’t seem to be able to finish.  Here are some sentences we might write to describe our intention:

I want to finish my website.

I want to have a successful website.

I want to stop procrastinating and get the website done.

I want to start making some money.

I want to help others.

Now, let’s whittle that down to one sentence and identify what it is we most desire to create or change.  The above sentences not only reflect our desired intention but also help to identify some of our motivations for wanting to make a change.  Taking a look at these sentences, it’s clear that we want to finish our website and have our website be successful—financially and by helping others (those who visit our website).  Now we’re down to two ideas.  The first idea, finishing our website, represents specifically what it is we desire to create.  So, without much difficulty, we’ve identified our intention.  The second idea, being successful financially and altruistically, comes closer to representing our motivations for creating a website.  Now we can write out our intention.

I am the successful completion of my website.

Simple, precise, and powerful.  We’ve gotten rid of the word “want” and replaced it with the two most powerful words in any language, “I am.”  I am suggests to the subconscious that what follows those two words is a done deal.  To want something means to wish for it; but wanting something also suggests that you lack what it is you wish for.  A good rule to follow when dealing with the subconscious is to never suggest that you “want” or “lack” your desire—because the subconscious will then do everything in its considerable power to create for you the specific lack you’ve suggested.  Once you have written a powerful sentence that identifies your intention, it's time to move on to identifying your motivations.

List the Five Most Important Motivational Reasons Why You Want to Achieve Your Intention—These five reasons or motivations should be those that excite you or touch your heart.  For the subconscious is the realm of our emotions and responds best to suggestions that have emotional appeal.  Love and fear are the emotions that serve as the great catalysts of creation.  We’ll, of course, take the high road and find some motivations that touch our heart and reflect what it is we love or desire.  Here are five reasons and/or motivations as to why we want to create a website.  We’ll frame our motivations this way.  I want to create a website because…

I want to be successful.

I want to help others.

I want to make lots of money.

I want to have my own website.

I deserve success and happiness.

Now, let’s rewrite these sentences in a more powerful way that will appeal to us emotionally.

I absolutely love having my own website.

Finishing my website enriches me and opens up wonderful opportunities for me.

My website is wildly successful in every way.

My website helps people change their lives for the better.

My website generates great abundance for myself and others.

These sentence all have emotional appeal to our subconscious and frame our motivations powerfully.  When you have written your reasons/motivations into sentences that are emotionally appealing, it's time to move on to discovering obstacles that may be preventing you from achieving your goals.

Discovering and Overcoming Obstacles—List all the obstacles (beliefs not in alignment with your intention) you are consciously aware of that you believe are preventing you from realizing your desired intention.  Simply put, why do you believe you cannot create or manifest your intention?

So what is preventing us from the completion of our website?  Hmmm.  Let’s see.  Okay, here are some obstacles that come to mind.

I’m not disciplined enough.

I’m not motivated enough.

I’m not focused enough.

I have a tendency to sabotage myself.

I sidetrack myself by finding other things that I believe “need” to be done.

Let’s take a closer look at our list.  All of these obstacles essentially fall under the heading of self-sabotage.  The lack of discipline, motivation, and focus along with the tendency to easily get sidetracked are all expressions of self-sabotage.  So, how do we overcome self-sabotage?  There are different methods.  One method is the use of direct suggestion in the self-hypnosis script.  It’s very important not to focus on these obstacles as negative suggestions within the script; it’s better to reframe the obstacles as positive, emotionally appealing suggestions. A direct suggestion such as “I’m going to overcome my lack of discipline, motivation, and focus.” calls attention to our perceived obstacles.  Reframing our obstacles into positive suggestions might look like this:

Each day I complete tasks that take me closer to the completion of my website.  My subconscious mind activates my full creative potential to help me complete each task with ease and efficiency.  And each task I complete creates a powerful momentum that carries me easily and quickly toward the successful completion of my website.

These suggestions are centered around making progress every day toward the successful completion of our website (which is our stated intention).  We suggest to ourselves that we are completing tasks every day (easily and efficiently), and that by completing these tasks, we create a powerful momentum that culminates in the completion of our website.  Completing tasks every day requires discipline, motivation, and focus.  So, we’ve reframed our obstacles in a positive way that also suggests that we will “easily and quickly” move toward the completion of our goal.  When you've reframed your obstacles in a powerful positive way, it's time to move on to finishing your script.
