Hypnosis Techniques: Metaphors

The use of metaphors in hypnosis scripts or conversational hypnosis is quite common.  They can be used in the form of words, phrases, or even stories.  Metaphors are prime examples of indirect suggestions.

Overcoming Fear and Anxiety (from Hypnosis Downloads) is my favorite hypnosis session to listen to at night.  This hypnosis mp3 download uses metaphors extensively throughout the session.  In one segment, they use the metaphor of schools of fish swimming by to represent (without specifically saying it) imaginary, worrisome thoughts that might arise in your mind.  Here's how my mind reacted to that metaphor and related accompanying suggestions.  I saw that I could calmly watch my own fearful or worrisome thoughts without the need to see them as being real.  I could let them pass through my mind (without getting attached to them) much like I could watch a school of fish swim by.  I could remain detached and calm and relaxed and simply observe those thoughts and see them as they really are--imaginary thoughts that aren't real.  And when I did, no feelings of anxiety arose within me.  Metaphors allow you the opportunity for your mind to make the relevant associations you need to make in order to solve your specific problems.
