Hypnosis Techniques: Eye Fixation
The purpose of the eye fixation technique is to focus the mind and to simulate going to sleep. This can work well for hypnosis or self-hypnosis.
The eye fixation technique usually begins with someone raising their eyes upward and fixing their attention on a spot on the ceiling and maintaining focus on that spot. They are then given suggestions that the muscles in their eyelids are growing tired and their eyelids are feeling heavier and heavier with each passing moment. The suggestion is given that their eyelids are so heavy that all they want to do is let their eyelids close. Rolling the eyes upward and closing the eyelids sends a signal to the subconscious mind that it's time to go to sleep. This is a very common technique.
One variation I like to use involves asking a subject who has their eyes closed to raise their eyes upward and stare at the spot on their forehead directly between their eyebrows. I have them hold their eyes there for about 10 to 15 seconds and then ask them to lower their eyes and let themselves relax completely. Doing this two to three times can be quite effective in getting someone to focus their mind on the suggestions they're given and in getting someone to relax.
