This technique utilizes a bit of a double bind. You ask a subject to close their eyes so tight that they couldn't open their eyes even if they wanted to. After reinforcing this suggestion several times in different ways, then ask them to try to open their eyes even though their eyes are shut so tight that opening them would be impossible. Trying to open their eyes at the same time that they're keeping their eyes shut tight, causes the eyelids to quiver slightly (similar to the REM state). After this suggestion, give them the suggestion to relax even deeper. This can be a very effective hypnosis or self hypnosis technique.
